Scientific exchange and technology transfer by China-ASEAN Center for Joint Research and Promotion of Marine Aquaculture Technology

Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute (YSFRI) undertakes the China-ASEAN Maritime Cooperation Fund Project,“China-ASEAN Center for Joint Research and Promotion of Marine Aquaculture Technology”, funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People′s Republic of China in 2016-2018. YSFRI has advantages in breeding and disease control of fish and shrimps, which are needed by the ASEAN countries. The project cooperation focuses on large-scale breeding techniques for rare marine finfish (such as wrasse, tuna and grouper) and ornamental tropical finfish; technical exploitation of marine species and cage culture techniques, and control of shrimp diseases. YSFRI collaborates with companies and scientific research institutes in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and other countries, to conduct demonstration and training on the above-mentioned aquaculture technologies.

At present,YSFRI has established three breeding demonstration bases in Sauron (Indonesia),Batam (Indonesia) and Malaysia which focuses on marine fish breeding and net cage fish culture technology.YSFRI has provided technical guidance on the cultivation and breeding of fish stock, and recommended optimization and rational measures on the disease prevention and control of parasites, and feed formulation.Several species of fish stock, including napoleon wrasseCheilinus undulatus, Leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus, gentian grouperEpinephelus Lanceolatus, yellowgrouperEpinephelus awoara, tiger grouperBlotchy rock cod, humpback grouperHumpback grouperand others have been collected and conditioned, and live bait cultivation system has been established.Net cage culture technology has been improved and demonstrated using large wind-resistant net cages.

YSFRI has also cooperated with ASEAN rare marine fish breeding center. In order to protect coral reef fish and to reduce the capture of wild fish, YSFRI has conducted research on breeding techniques of marine ornamental fish. A three-dimensional recirculating aquaculture system for the culture of marine ornamental coral reef fish was developed, in order to collect more than ten species of small coral reef fish cryopreservation samples.Based on this work, they collected and cultured 44 pairs of fish stock selected from eleven varieties of five species, obtained breeding techniques for more than seven species of Amphiprioninae andestablisheda batch seedling production technique.

YSFRIhas committed to cooperating with the ASEAN countries in the prevention and control of shrimp disease for many years, including Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries, by conducting EMS/AHPND epidemiological information and etiological research, and optimized the primers for AHPND and CMNV on-site rapid detection kits. More than 200 kits have been developed.

YSFRI has established cooperation with Salim Group (Batam, Indonesia), Halim Company (Sauron, Indonesia),Red-Seidon Aquaculture Company(Palawan, Philippines), GST Company(Penang, Malaysia), etc. At the same time, cooperation has been supported by the local government: communication and cooperation were carried out on aquaculture of coral reef fish Napoleon WrasseCheilinus undulatus, Leopard Coral GrouperPlectropomus leopardusand Oceanic TunaThunnus obesusandThunnus albacores, supported by the Forest Department of West Papua Barat Province and the Raja Ampat Government.During the visit to Malaysia, the Minister of Fisheries of Malaysia received the YSFRI delegation. YSFRI has conducted academic exchange withNetwork of Aquaculture Center in Asia-Pacific(NACA), Kasetsart University, Asian Institute of Technology, Mahidol University, Brunei Hiseaton Company, etc.YSFRI conducted five personnel training sessions in China, Indonesia and Malaysia respectively, for more than 200 researchers and government staff.YSFRI organized the IMNV prevention and control capacity building seminars and the Office International Des Epizooties(OIE) Asia Pacific Regional Symposium on Aquatic Animals Contact Persons with more than 80 participants from all over the world.
